 Epilepsy is not a rare condition, and can affect almost anyone.  In fact, most people know someone who has epilepsy.  If you or a loved one is living with epilepsy or a seizure disorder, you are not alone.  Epilepsy and seizure disorders affect nearly 2.5 million people in the United States. Epilepsy is as prevalent as Type I diabetes, and more common than Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis combined.  Fortunately, advances in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy are enabling individuals with epilepsy to lead healthy, active lives.

Bayfront’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is a Level IV epilepsy center. The program is led by nationally-recognized, Erasmo A. Passaro, M.D., and offers state-of-the-art diagnosis, evaluation, medical treatment, surgical treatment, and on-going support. Bayfront’s premier program is the only one of its kind in Pinellas County, and one of only five, Level IV regional epilepsy referral centers in Florida (the highest designation of the National Association of Epilepsy Centers)

 

 

 The Bayfront Approach

Our goal at Bayfront is to accurately diagnose and classify the seizure or epilepsy type.  We want to make the patient and family feel comfortable, and to teach them about their condition. Because epilepsy can affect every aspect of a person's life-physical, emotional, social and psychological-we also address the non-medical needs of the patient and family.  In addition to exploring the patient's symptoms, it is necessary to address their concern about the long-term use of anti-epileptic drugs and the effects of a chronic disorder. Counseling and education are important facets of our high quality care.

Patient and Family Centered Care

A patient's history and prior medical records are carefully reviewed in detail. Diagnostic studies are also used to classify the seizure or epilepsy type. At Bayfront, we feel that the care of patients with epilepsy should reflect the perspective of the patient. We encourage patients and family to play an active role in selecting and implementing a treatment plan.  Once an accurate diagnosis is made, we can offer a variety of treatment options.

The Bayfront Epilepsy Program meets and exceeds the guidelines of a LEVEL IV epilepsy center as designated by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). It is only one of five LEVEL IV epilepsy centers in the state of Florida and the only one of its kind in Pinellas County.

Patients benefit from a multi-disciplinary team of experiences specialists including an epileptologist, Erasmo A. Passaro, MD who is one of a few board certified epilepsy specialists in Florida and the only one in Pinellas County. Our team also includes Kirk W. Jobe, MD an epilepsy neurosurgeon who has performed over 100 epilepsy surgery procedures, a board certified neuropsychologist with greater than 10 years experience in evaluating and treating patients with epilepsy. Other team members include a neuroradiologist and an interventional neuroradiologist, nuclear medicine specialist, physician assistant, registered nurses, registered EEG technologists, speech pathologists, pharmacist and social worker.
